Soft Florals & Cozy Plaid – Plus Exclusive Offer!

Create a dreamy Botanical Plaid background with layered stenciling.

Hi crafty friends! Today I’m sharing a soft, floral card featuring the Botanical Plaid layering stencils from Altenew. This set is perfect if you love the look of plaid but want something a little more delicate and feminine. I followed the layering guide to build a dreamy peach-and-pink background, then added a bold foiled sentiment on top for a card that works for so many occasions.

Crafting the Card

I started by creating the background with the Botanical Plaid stencils, following the layering guide as my roadmap. On a panel of smooth white cardstock, I brushed on a very light layer of Shattered Shell ink to tint the background and keep the white from feeling too stark. This soft wash of color helps everything feel cohesive once all of the layers are added.

Next, I worked through the floral layers. For the first flower layer, I used Blush as my soft base color and covered the bloom areas with a light hand. On the second floral stencil, I brought in Rouge and concentrated the ink toward the centers and along some of the petal edges. The two pinks together give the roses that pretty, romantic depth without getting too dark.

Once the flowers were in place, I moved on to the leaves. I started with Silver Sprout for the larger, more open leaf areas, keeping the color a bit lighter toward the tips. On the detail layer, I blended Sagestone over portions of the leaves to add shading and definition.

With the botanicals finished, it was time for the plaid. Using the plaid stencil layers from the guide, I first blended Shattered Shell in some of the stripe openings, keeping the color soft so the pattern wouldn’t overpower the florals. On the remaining stripe layers, I added Blush, overlapping some of the Shattered Shell areas so the colors mix and create subtle variations. Because the florals are already in place, the plaid weaves in and around the images, which gives the background so much movement and interest.

For the sentiment, I used the Encouraging Sentiments Hot Foil Plate Set. I hot foiled the sentiment in shiny gold, making the sentiment feel extra special. This sentiment set is 50% OFF for a limited time. I popped the whole piece up using Instant Dimension Foam Tape in the center of the card so it stands out from the busy background.

To finish the card, I trimmed the panel slightly and added it to an A2 card base. A few tiny Stellar Sequins in Peony Gold scattered around the florals give just the right amount of sparkle without overwhelming the design.
