Upcycled Glass Container: Beautiful Home Decor
Transforming a Dollar Store Dish into Dreamy Decor!
Hey crafty friends! Today, I’m excited to share with you a unique upcycling project that transformed an old glass container into a beautiful home decor piece. This project is part two of my final level two challenge for the Altenew Educator Certification Program. For this challenge, I was asked to create a project involving altering or upcycling an item. I chose to upcycle an old glass container that has been sitting in my storage closet for years.

What is Upcycling?
Upcycling is the process of transforming old, discarded, or unwanted items into new, useful, and often beautiful creations. It’s a great way to get creative, reduce waste, and give new life to old items. Upcycling can be applied to various items, from furniture and home decor to paper crafts and jewelry.
Creating the Upcycled Glass Container
To start, I cleaned the glass container thoroughly. I then used alcohol inks to color the bottom portion of the container in blues, greens, and teals.

Next, I added jute twine to the top third of the dish, wrapping it around the container to create a rustic, textured look.

Finally, I created four white layered paper flowers using the Prickly Pear Die Set. I ink blended the edges of the flowers using Ocean Waves Fresh Dye Ink, and added a teal enamel dot from the Sweet Dreams Enamel Dots to each of the centers of the flowers. I then adhered the flowers around the edge of the container, over the twine.

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about how this project would turn out. Upcycling can be unpredictable, and it’s hard to envision the final result. But now that it’s complete, I’m absolutely thrilled with how it turned out! The colors, textures, and flowers all come together to create a beautiful, unique piece that’s perfect for my craft room decor.

Tips
- Don’t be afraid to get creative and try new things – upcycling is all about experimentation and transformation!
- Experiment with different colors and textures when upcycling an item.
- Consider adding natural elements, like twine or flowers, to give your project a organic feel.
Happy crafting, and I’ll see you in the next video!
